How I Stay Calm When Things Are Out Of My Control

When flipping through the news you can't help but ask yourself what is happening to this world, and what is it going to be next? Another murder, scandal, crisis? Sometimes it can get to be a bit much. I personally believe the bad news is overinflated by the media, but still overwhelming at times, to say the least.

As a person who experiences occasional anxiety, and a person with a cautious personality type. I would be the first one to get worked up and worry about these things. I would worry about how all the violence, racism, war and famine around the world would eventually affect me and my family. I would also worry about the fact that I felt I had no control over everything and couldn't fix things.

Now I find that my worry is no longer about the things that are going on, but instead, it is directed toward teaching my kids not to worry and teaching them to be brave in the midst of the uncertainty. Today I would like to share with you how I have learned to release fear and worry and keep calm even when it seems like this world is crashing down around me.

I focus on what I can control.

Over time I have realized that when I focus on the things I can't control, the more anxious I become. When I worry about things that may happen tomorrow and what could have happened yesterday I start to feel even more out of control and fearful.

Instead of worrying I try to put my faith in God that He will protect my family and myself from harm. I also try to put all of my efforts into making my life and the things I can control the best that I can make them.

Be the light.

Whenever I drop my kids off at school or leave them to where they have to be responsible for their own behavior and actions I tell them to "be the light". When I tell them this they know that I mean to be different, make the right decisions and behave in a manner that is pleasing unto God.

When I go through my day setting out to "be the light" I take my eyes off of judging what others are doing and focus on doing what I can do to make the world a better place.

Pray without ceasing.

In the Bible in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 reads:

"16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."

I try to remember this verse when I am feeling anxious and when things seem to be going array. I know that even on my worst day there is someone somewhere having an even WORSE day. It doesn't make me feel better that I am doing better than someone else, but it helps me to put things into perspective. I am blessed.

I also take all of my worries and cares unto God in prayer. I pray and ask Him to give me peace inside as well as to remove fear and worry from my heart and the hearts and minds of my children. Giving my cares over to God my higher power helps me to feel calm and relaxed.

So, friends, these are just a few ways that help me remain calm during times of uncertainty. Even though every day isn't perfect and there are a lot of scary things happening in the world, focusing on what I can control and what I can do to make the world a little better makes things a heck of a lot easier and helps me to stay a little calmer.
